Getting Ready

These images show moments from the process of “Getting Ready” that women often go through. Being a woman, I’m quite familiar with this process, and often it strikes me just how much time women put into their appearance. Instead of shooting the before and after, I shot the actual process, because that is where the most interesting moments occur. Some of the moments I chose to capture are surprisingly violent and strange, for example, scrubbing old makeup off or purposely ripping a pair of tights. Since I was aware that my subjects might be trying their best to look good for the camera, I made sure to capture the moments where they weren’t paying as much attention to me. This project was an investigation of “traditional” women and the process they go through to make themselves feel attractive.
